Dirsync and Office 365 Pro Plus

Hello spiceheads,

I am migrating from Office 2007 to Office 365 Pro Plus (just the client, no hosted exchange, etc). I have Server 2008 R2 domain/forest functional levels and a local Exchange 2010 SP1 server and want to use dirsync to synchronize my user information so that users don't have to sign in with different credentials to install/activate office.

I was reviewing the information regarding the preparation for directory sync from the link below

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj151831

My question has to do with the "Review UPN Requirements" portion. Specifically with the publicly routable domain. My AD domain is abc.local so I would need to add an alternative UPN suffix, say abc.com. Does this require me to have the .com version registered or is it that I just need to have the TLD?
