Sharepoint Online and Zip files

So we noticed an issue after our recent transition from on premise to hosted SharePoint. We have entire folders of instructor material zipped so that they can be downloaded by instructors and accessed offline and these files are in different document libraries. When we started to download some of them we noticed that the downloads were failing part way through. I opened a support request and I was told that this was due to the nature of the firewall and virus scanning occurring in the hosting environment and that the only way around this is to increase the timeout on the browsers being used to download the files. Otherwise we are SOL according to Microsoft.

Is this true or was the tech support rep feeding me a line? It seems plausible on a certain level, but I'm still skeptical. If it is true, have any of you found a way around it? I've thought about fiddling with different page view web parts, but I've never had much luck with them, particularly with non IE browsers.
