Office 365 Changeover

I have recently migrated my Exchange Server 2003 to Office 365. I have been live for 6-8 months and everything is working well. I want to decommission my Exchange server but once I remove this, I will have no place to edit the Exchange Schema data which I need to do on premise since I am running DIRSYNC.

For example if I want to edit exchange type properties I have to do it from my Active directory shortcut on my current Exchange Server.

I have read that you can do a partial install of a newer version of exchange server which you do not need a license for which will extend the schema.

Will this work?

If so do I need to install this first, and sync the schema, or can I do a backup and restore to the new exchange setup?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Chris
