We are subscribed to Office 365 Midsize Plan which includes a subscription license to Office Pro Plus (2013). WE deploy our desktops using MokaFive which is a client side virtualization management tool. Essentially Moka uses a modified version of VMware player to play a managed windows 7 image on the desktop side. Like a 'desktop vdi' solution. IT's layered so that we can push updates to a golden image which will then incrementally update the client images without affecting the user profiles. Anyway, per what I could find in Microsoft documentation; on this golden image we have Office installed using the office deployment tool where you run the command line script to install office silently without the activation key being installed. It seemed to work perfectly. When I new mokafive desktop is deployed, the user logs in and activates office and it accepts the username and password and performs as expected.
The problem is, randomly (usually after several weeks, but recently even just a couple of days) batches of users will 'lose' their activation. The activation windows pops up and requests the username and password. We could live with this, but it will NOT accept the username and password. IT says there is a problem with the account, and It asks you to run the office repair tool, which either doesn't run at all, or if it will run, it basically uninstalls office and makes it completely unusable. Sometimes it ends up resolving itself, but when it doesn't, we have found the ONLY way to fix this issue is to reinstall the moka image (which gets rid of the user layer entirely).
NOTE: If you run the OSPP script on the client during the issue, it will say they have a trial key installed instead of the normal key (it says it has the subscription key if you run it prior to this activation popup. )
One thing I am wondering, is if the licensing would allow office365 to be installed on the image using a volume license key. It does appear from some documentation that it, alond with the volume license MSI media can be used to install it on an RDS server, but I cant find anything about using it on the client side. If so, I have never used office VLK's. Can I purchase one and download the media with my open licensing where I purchased my server and windows 7 keys? or do I have to do something else?
This is getting extraordinarily frustrating. We have only about 45 users, and between Moka and office365 which were supposed to have saved me administration headaches, I think Im going to have to hire someone just to manage these headaches!
