Aliasing issues with deleted users

Came across an interesting issue this morning. Fred Flinstone has fred@theflinstones.com but leaves. I delete Fred's Office365 account and add the alias to Wilma Flinstone's account. If I emailed Fred and relied on the auto populate section of Outlook, the message bounced back to me as undeliverable - ExRecipNotFound.

If I typed in the full email address fred@theflinstones.com, the alias worked and Wilma received the message. Names and domain name is for illustrative purposes only.

I doubt this is an issue except for internal users. But of a pain though.

Should I have done things differently when deleting Fred's account so I wouldn't have had this issue? Should I have left his account and just removed the licence or what should I have done?
