I am experiencing issues with mail users in office 365 where random mail users "lose" their personal email address.
In the Exchange admin center on Office 365, under recipients - contacts, there is an option to create a mail user. This is similar to a mail contact with the addition of an internal email address for the sole purpose of forwarding emails to their personal email without the need to create a mailbox.
For example, in an on prep exchange environment, we accomplish this by creating a contact with their personal email address as the primary smtp email and adding a secondary smtp company email address. The user now has an company email address which forwards to their personal email address without the use of a mailbox.
